Appearance:

What is the general appearance of a Yorkshire Terrier? The Yorkshire Terrier has a silky, fine, long, glossy coat. The Yorkshire Terrier can vary in color including: black, white, tan, blue, fawn, and bronze.

Size:

How big is a Yorkshire Terrier? With regards to size, the Yorkshire Terrier breed is a small dog. The Yorkshire Terrie is 3-7 pounds in weight and 6-7 inches in height. The Yorkshire Terrier belongs to the Toy group.

Activity:

Yorkshire Terriers are active indoors, so a yard is unnecessary. This breed does tend to bark a lot, but can be trained out of this habit. They make excellent watch dogs as they are extremely proactive of their territory. Most Yorkshire Terriers are lap dogs and are happy sitting in their owners lap all day. This breed likes to play tug of war and chase shadows. Yorkshire Terriers do not eat much and feeding is inexpensive.

Health:

Yorkshire Terriers can be expected to live 12-15 years. Avoid exotic treats as they this breed has a delicate digestive system. Stick with dried food to keep their teeth strong. Yorkshire Terriers are prone to teeth decay as well as paralysis in the hindquarters caused by herniated disks in the spine.

Grooming:

Yorkshire Terriers sheds little to no hair, but weekly grooming is still needed. They have no undercoat. Brush their coat and clip nails. If your Yorkshire Terrier will be in dog shows, hours of grooming is needed to maintain their long coats. Teeth should be cleaned regularly. Because of this breed’s long coat, special attention should be given to the anus as it can become matted and lead to compacted feces.

Temperament:

What does a Yorkshire Terrier act like? The temperament of a Yorkshire Terrier is intelligent, confident, and affectionate. The Yorkshire Terrier is good with children. The Yorkshire Terrier makes a great house or apartment pet if you train them properly. Yorkies get along well with other pets, but are extremely jealous of their owners attention.
